Spirit of Tasmania is proud to support 39-year-old Eddy
Kontelj, as he prepares to break the current 82 hour Guinness World
Record for the Longest Static Cycling Marathon whilst raising funds
and creating awareness for charity.
As part of Eddy's training, on Friday 6th July 2007 he will ride
his exercise bike from Devonport to Melbourne across Bass Strait on
the Spirit of Tasmania to raise awareness and much needed
funds for depression.
Peter Simmons, Chief Executive Officer, Spirit of
Tasmania, said depression is a widespread everyday issue and
touches the lives of most people whether it is through a family
member, friend or acquaintance.
"We are happy to support Eddy on his promotional ride over Bass
Strait and to be contributing towards such a worthwhile cause," he
said.
"Eddy's determination, spirit and generous contribution to his
local community is outstanding.
"On behalf of everyone at Spirit of Tasmania, we wish
Eddy every success with his Guinness World Record attempt and
fundraising efforts," Peter said.
In 2002, Eddy broke the Guinness World Record when he cycled for
72 hours and raised awareness and funding for the Asthma
Foundation. Confident to succeed again, he will attempt to ride for
100 hours to break the current 82 hour record.
"The main record attempt ride will take place from 24th to 28th
July 2007, at the Burnie Surf Life Saving Club," said Eddy.
"During the ride, my colleagues will
also endeavour to increase the awareness and decrease the stigma
attached to depression.
"And at the same time raise in excess
of $100,000 for beyondblue - the national initiative which works to
raise awareness of depression, anxiety, and related drug and
alcohol problems."
Donations can be placed directly into
the fundraiser collection tins and money boxes during the ride on
Spirit of Tasmania. Or donations can be pledged through
any ANZ branch around Australia to the Depression Awareness
Account, or by post to The Depression Awareness Fundraiser, 141
Wilson Street, Burnie, Tasmania 7320. All donations over $2.00 will
be tax deductible so make sure you note your details on the back of
the envelope.
