16 April 2007
When the Shannon's Goggomobil Dart drives off the Spirit of
Tasmania II on Monday 16 April it will mark the start
of a grand journey around the state for the little car.
Not only will the Goggomobil lead off the ship a large group of
other Classic cars for the journey around Tasmania, it will lead
the field in many stages during the 2007 Running of the Tarmac
Rally, including the Prologue at George Town, the Longford town
stage and the Glenorchy night stage.
Melindy Green, Director Passenger Sales, Marketing &
Communications said Spirit of Tasmania is delighted to
assist with the sponsorship and transportation of vehicles to
Tasmanian for this highly popular motor sport event.
"We provide a convenient and reliable service giving drivers the
opportunity and freedom to travel from Melbourne to Devonport in
comfort and with their own vehicle," she said.
"As soon as you drive onboard the ship your holiday begins. You
can sit back, relax and enjoy the ride however you choose - with a
fine dining experience in Season's Restaurant or quietly retire to
the serenity of your own cabin for a good night's sleep.
"Targa attracts many tourists and keen motor sport enthusiasts
to the State. Drivers from all over Australia are expected to
travel to Tasmania to experience the excitement and festivities of
Targa 2007.
"Targa provides a perfect platform to showcase Tasmania as an
unparalleled travel and touring destination," Melindy said.
The Goggomobil came into particular prominence through a Yellow
Pages television commercial several years ago, is sure to be a real
hit with Targa fans.
The car will be on display at the Silverdome Car Expo in
Launceston from April 17 to 19, at the Shannon's Show and Shine at
Barilla Bay Restaurant in Cambridge on April 20, as well as at the
official finish at Hobart's Wrest Point on April 22.
The first Goggomobils were made in Germany by Hans Glas in 1955,
and the car in Tasmania for Targa was conceived and built by Sydney
fibreglass specialist, Bill Buckle.
The Dart was introduced in 1958 as a fun, affordable sports car
based on an imported German Goggomobil microcar chassis.
