Spirit of Tasmania will be awarding two $5000 scholarships
tonight to promising hospitality and tourism students beginning the
Bachelor of Business Administration at the University of
Tasmania.
Tourism Industry Council Tasmania CEO, Daniel Hanna, will be
presenting the awards to Charles Renner of Dover and Bianca
Perriman of Granton at the Drysdale Institute of Tafe, where they
recently completed the Advanced Diploma of Hospitality/Tourism
Management.
"It's essential not only to continually update the Tasmanian
product, but to have the human resources to support the future of
tourism in our state, and Spirit of Tasmania is leading the way,"
said Mr Hanna.
Mr Renner (20 years old) said he aimed to start his own fruit
winery business one day.
"With my small business, I hope to give back much needed support
to the far south community; this will occur in the way of
employment and promote a higher level of tourist numbers."
The hospitality student started the Far South Youth Committee
while at high school, raising money to provide activities and set
up facilities for young people. Mr Renner currently writes for a
magazine in the Huon Valley: Southern Exposure.
"I never in my wildest dreams thought I would end up with the
opportunity of enrolling in University, let alone being able to
apply for a scholarship to assist me in these endeavours," said Mr
Renner.
Ms Perriman, winner of the tourism scholarship, said it was the
diversity of the industry that kept her passionate about her
studies. The 20 year old also works at a pharmacy in her spare time
and even knows the basics of fire fighting, having been a member of
the Claremont Junior Fire Brigade.
"I would like to pursue a career within Tourism Tasmania and
help develop marketing strategies that inspire people to come and
holiday in Tasmania. It helps our economy grow.
"I am so grateful to Drysdale. I have a learning disability, and
it wasn't until I came here that I realised I could actually
achieve these things. The tremendous support I received from the
teachers really helped me," she said.
Charles Griplas, CEO of Spirit of Tasmania, said this was the
sixth year TT-Line had provided the scholarships and would continue
to review the value of the programme for the tourism industry.
"We have been very pleased with the
achievements of our scholarship recipients over the years,
graduating with excellent results and moving onto exciting
careers," said Mr Griplas.
