30 October 2008

Golfing legend and original glamour girl Jan Stephenson, aged 56, today lent her support to Spirit of Tasmania's 'Have you got the Spirit?' campaign.

Spirit of Tasmania has set out to celebrate those people who demonstrate true spirit and energy by recognising their achievements. The 'Have you got the Spirit?' search is seeking out people within the community with incredible, wonderful, funny, sad or inspirational stories. And what's more, there is over $15,000 in prizes to be won.

Stephenson said, "Spirit of Tasmania has developed a fantastic concept to celebrate my generation's ongoing achievements. Thanks to Spirit, those in our community deserving acknowledgement will be rewarded. We're all still actively 'out there' achieving, doing, playing, leading and contributing. I see it every day in my work, my travels, my own community and of course on the course. There's no stopping us!

"I certainly do not let my age decide how I enjoy and make the most of life. I still feel like I'm 25, I still have dreams, a thirst for adventure and a desire to try new things. I believe this search will reveal that I'm not alone."

The search to crown Australia's most 'Active Adults' is well under way. Nominations have been rolling in daily since the campaign opened on 16 September 2008. The judging panel, consisting of cricket legend Max Walker, editor of Australian Senior Traveller, Sue Preston, and CEO of Spirit of Tasmania, Charles Griplas, have a tough task ahead of them.

Griplas said, "Our community campaign is generating an exciting response from the community. We have received submissions from Gunnedah to Kanahooka, from Creswick to Myrtleford, from Tramere to Railton. The community is galvanized. The nominations are capturing the essence of true Spirit.

"There's a 90 year old woman with a full diary who travels independently and daily on public transport, there's a man despite countless illness setbacks who still drops everything to help out if others ask, there are sons and daughters, wives and friends who have been motivated to proudly nominate their loved ones."

Members of the public are invited to nominate either themselves, someone in their family, a friend or neighbour who they believe fits the criteria … a person over the age of 45 from New South Wales, Victoria or Tasmania who has achieved something special or has an interesting story to tell.

Two winners, as judged by the panel, will receive a luxury Australian holiday for themselves and three friends. One winner from the mainland and one from Tasmania will each receive a trip on the Spirit of Tasmania.

The two winners will be announced on Thursday 11 December 2008.

Stephenson said, "What a great way to share the achievements of your life partner or friend or Gran.  These once in a lifetime holiday experiences are a great temptation plus the winners get to take three friends! It really is an exceptional opportunity."

The mainland winner will go on to enjoy a five night Pure Tasmania Experience for four including accommodation at the stunning Cradle Mountain Chateau and a journey on the Reflections and Rainforest Canoe. They will then visit the idyllic Strahan Village, sampling some Tasmanian delights with a delicious wine and cheese tasting and take a trip on the breathtaking West Coast Wilderness Railway.

The Tasmanian winner will enjoy a five night Stella Hospitality Group experience for four with accommodation at the beautiful Mantra on Russell in Melbourne. The party will experience the Eureka Skydeck including the thrill of 'The Edge' before relaxing on a Melbourne River Cruise. The travellers will then go on to Peppers The Sands, Torquay where they will be able to enjoy 18-holes of golf and luxuriate with a deep relaxation treatment at Saltair Spa Retreat.

Call for nominations are open until 30 November 2008. Entrants are asked to submit in no more that 250 words why they think their nominated 'Active Adult' deserves to win the title. Entries can be submitted via the website spiritoftasmania.com.au or via post, at: Have you got the Spirit? Promotion, PO Box 323, Port Melbourne, Victoria 3207. Full terms and conditions can be found on the above website.
