Spirit of Tasmania donated $1000 to
Gran's Van, a charity who helps the needy and less privileged in
Devonport, at 11.00am today.
A presentation was held on board the ship and Captain Glenn
Cole presented the cheque on behalf of Spirit of Tasmania II to
their nominated local charity, Gran's Van.
The donation occurs as part of a safety initiative, Lost
Time to Injury (LTI), which aims to increase awareness of workplace
safety so that crew members maintain a safe work environment at all
times. Spirit of Tasmania II achieved an amazing 60 days LTI
free.
Food such as sandwiches, hearty soup and hot drinks are
donated from the van to the local community in Devonport as well as
the provision of blankets, beanies and warm clothing.
Gran's van operates in East and West Devonport on Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday nights from 7.00pm till 8.30pm. During the
colder months the van also serves a Sunday night stew.
The charity van has been helping the local community for over two
and half years and is a perfect example of the generosity of
Australians giving back to the community.
Mr Ian Paterson, president of the association, is proud
to be part of the founding committee and works alongside a
dedicated team of over 300 volunteers, feeding on average between
10 - 25 people a night.
"We work for Gran's Van because we enjoy doing something to
fill in a gap that exists in our community - helping
people who need some assistance." said Mr Paterson.
Spirit of Tasmania is proud to offer Gran's Van the donation
because of their continuous efforts towards helping those in need
and for giving up their time regularly to put a smile on people's
faces.
