"Spirit of Tasmania's $65 promotion has successfully boosted
visitor numbers to Tasmania during the autumn months," Chief
Executive Officer Charles Griplas said.
"We are overwhelmed with the results of the current promotion that
has stimulated a 30 per cent increase in bookings in its first
week," he said.
"The initiative generated a record number of online bookings and
additional staff were required to manage unprecedented call
volumes.
"Importantly, the majority of these bookings are for people
travelling from Melbourne to Devonport for extended stays in
Tasmania."
Mr Griplas said as a Tasmanian tourism industry icon, Spirit of
Tasmania was well aware of its unique ability to attract people to
Tasmania through its various marketing initiatives.
"This is important for the state's tourist industry and the
broader Tasmanian economy," he said.
"But it is equally important that Spirit of Tasmania wins market
share for the state at a time when Australians are being encouraged
to holiday at home rather than overseas.
"Strengthening our position in the market will be a focus for the
company this year. This initiative is an important first step as we
have captured the interest of mainland Australia."
The $65 promotion commenced on 25 January 2009 and will conclude
on 14 February for travel on selected day sailings until 19 April
2009.
Under the sale conditions passengers are able to purchase a day
sailing ticket for $65 per person each way and take their car from
$65 each way.
