31 August 2009
Spirit
of Tasmania has continued its support for Melbourne Day, held on 30
August each year. It is a very special day and marks 174 years
since the founding of Melbourne - the day the first European
settlers sailed from Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on board the
schooner, Enterprize.
It was on 30 August 1835 that the schooner Enterprize under
Captain John Lancey, sailing from Launceston, landed on the north
bank of the Yarra and commenced the establishment of a new
settlement. This location today is known as Enterprize Park where
Williams Street and Flinders Street meet near the old Customs
House.
Melbourne Day celebrates much more than just the day the city
was founded. It represents the point at which the proud community
of Melbourne began to form and is a day to celebrate all the
elements that contribute to making Melbourne one of the world's
great and most liveable cities.
A special message of congratulation direct from the Mayor of
Launceston arrived in Melbourne on board Spirit of Tasmania at
7:00am, Sunday 30 August, to acknowledge the historical link
between the two cities.
Captain Mark Davis delivered the letter to the Lord Mayor Robert
Doyle at the official flag raising ceremony.
The Historical Re-enactment Society performed a rifle salute
upon the raising of the flag and aboriginal dancers performed
traditional songs and rituals for audiences.
As such an iconic Australian brand, Spirit of Tasmania has
continued to Melbourne Day.
