Spirit of Tasmania's tastebuds have been well and truly
tantalised over the past two months as entries flooded in for the
Tassie Tastes Recipe Competition.
Now, the judging panel for this nationwide search to uncover and
celebrate some of the public's great personal recipes is delighted
to announce its six finalists.
With more than 330 recipes received, the top three entries from
both the Major Prize and Tasmanian Categories will be taste tested
by the judging panel today on board Spirit of Tasmania in
Devonport at 2pm.
Spirit of Tasmania's General Manager of Retail & Hospitality,
Nick Harriman said, "The competition has been a great success. The
panel has been impressed with the many high quality recipes
received. The fantastic response proves that Australians share a
great love of food and take pride in their home cooking.
"We have discovered some truly mouth-watering recipes from a
diverse range of world-wide cuisines. Many of the entries have been
passed down through generations. We are now looking forward to
being able to taste the flavours for ourselves."
In the Major Prize Category, which was open to all Australians,
Lisa Maddisson from Miami in Queensland impressed the judges with
her recipe for Moroccan Lamb Shanks. Susan Thorogood of Burra in
South Australia stimulated tastebuds with her Mushroom Risotto with
Blue Cheese, Chestnuts and Cider. Janette Martin from Yarra Glen in
Victoria caught the judges' attention with her Woodbridge Salmon
and Scallops.
The Tasmanian Category looked for the best Tassie-themed recipe
submitted by a resident of the island state. Simone Bett from Mt
Nelson put forward her Seared Tasmanian Scallops with Roasted
Beetroot, Walnut and Baby Spinach Salad. Kirsty Phillips of Swansea
provided what judges felt to be the ideal Tassie dessert with her
Blackberry and Apple Crumble. Rob Breier and Stella Laker of
Bicheno entered their Freycinet Coast-style BBQ Chicken Kebabs
recipe.
Judges are also in the process of choosing the winner of the Kids
Category, which invited those aged 12 and under to put together
their own 'fantasy recipe' in the form of a short poem for Spirit's
imaginary forthcoming kid's menu. This category has seen
submissions ranging from Octopus Tentacles to Monster Fish Fingers
and even a Fairy Falafel and Herby Dragon Salad!
The winning dish in the Major Prize category will be featured as
part of the on board restaurant's specials menu, meaning the winner
can take pride in the fact that thousands of people are enjoying
their dish. The lucky winner will receive a mouth-watering,
food-focused holiday for two in Tasmania worth over $4,700. Special
prizes will also be awarded for the Tasmanian and Kids Fantasy
Recipe categories.
The competition coincides with recent hospitality changes on board
the ships, which have seen the best of Tasmania's food and wine
available to passengers. The new menus have been accompanied by
name changes to the bars and restaurants, reflecting the strong
Tasmanian influence.
