Spirit of Tasmania is
delighted to announce the winners of its Tassie Tastes Recipe
Competition. The nationwide search has uncovered and celebrated the
Australian public's great personal recipes.
In what was a fitting result for an
iconic ship, seafood was the order of the day with scallops being a
prominent ingredient in the two winning recipes. Janette Martin of
Yarra Glen in Victoria won the judges' approval in the Major Prize
Category with her tantalising recipe for Woodbridge Salmon &
Scallops.
In the Tasmanian Category, Simone Bett of Mt Nelson was victorious
with her recipe for Seared Tasmanian Scallops with Roasted
Beetroot, Walnut and Baby Spinach Salad.
With more than 330 recipes received over the past two months the
competition was fierce. The Major Prize and Tasmanian Category
winners were decided by the judging panel during a flavoursome
taste test on board Spirit of Tasmania at East Devonport
yesterday.
Spirit of Tasmania's General Manager of Retail &
Hospitality, Nick Harriman said, "It was a great pleasure to taste
six delicious recipes today. The quality of these recipes meant it
was a very tough choice.
"The competition has been a great success. The panel has been
impressed with the many high quality recipes received. The
fantastic response proves that Australians share a great love of
food and take pride in their home cooking.
"We have discovered some truly mouth-watering recipes from a
diverse range of world-wide cuisines. Many of the entries have been
passed down through generations."
Meanwhile, 12 year old Ernie Donato of Wantirna South in Victoria
won the Kids' Fantasy Recipe Category with the following poetic
submission:
"Eight Octopus Tentacles; A handful of barnacles, half a mermaids
tail, then, add the eye of a whale, mix it all up in a sunken
treasure chest. Cook for an hour until it tastes the best. It's
nice served with star fish sprinkles and a couple of
periwinkles."
Woodbridge Salmon & Scallops will now be featured as part of
the on board restaurant's specials menu, meaning Janette Martin can
take pride in the fact that thousands of people are enjoying her
dish. Janette will receive a mouth-watering, food-focused holiday
for two in Tasmania worth over $4,700. Special prizes have also
been awarded for the Tasmanian and Kids Fantasy Recipe
Categories.
The competition coincides with recent hospitality changes on board
the ships, which have seen the best of Tasmania's foods and wines
being made available to passengers. The new menus have been
accompanied by name changes to the bars and restaurants, reflecting
the strong Tasmanian influence.
