Spirit raises $100,000 from relief cruise

27 January 2011

A dedicated, Spirit of Tasmania Australia Day flood relief cruise on Port Phillip Bay this week raised more than $100,000.

TT-Line Company Pty Ltd donated the services of Spirit of Tasmania II free of charge in a combined effort with Melbourne talk radio station 3AW and the Neil Mitchell program to raise funds for flood victims.

Spirit of Tasmania II sailed into Port Phillip Bay on Australia Day at 8.30am with approximately 600 generous people who donated to the flood relief appeal in Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania.

Guests were treated to morning tea, self-guided tours and live entertainment.

More than $64,000 was raised from 3AW's listeners, suppliers and people who donated further money on the sailing.

Spirit of Tasmania also donated proceeds from $75 Day Tickets booked on Australia Day for travel until 2 May. A total of $31,546 in passenger fares was raised.

"TT-Line was delighted to be able to assist the flood relief appeal by providing Spirit of Tasmania II for the event," said Acting CEO Scott Hadley.

"Importantly, the donations were an amazing demonstration of generosity from fellow Australians.  It was a wonderful way to celebrate Australia Day with a fantastic fundraising result."

In addition, 3AW's Neil Mitchell program auctioned a prize giveaway for Spirit of Tasmania in conjunction with Mercure Hobart for a return trip for two adults in a Twin Porthole Cabin including a car with five nights accommodation and breakfast at the Mercure valued up to $2353.

A listener on the radio bid $5000 for the prize, bringing the grand total to more than$100,000!  The winner's cabin will be upgraded to a Deluxe Cabin because of this generous bid.

Spirit of Tasmania thanks the following sponsors for making Australia Day such a huge success; Double T Entertainment, FBIS International Protective Services, Juicy Isle Klaas Bake House, Norm Phillips & Bros, Perry Bros Bakery, POAGS, Port of Melbourne Corporation, Skilled Maritime Services and Tasmania at Sea and Tourism Brochure Exchange on board Spirit of Tasmania.
