24 August 2011

Two hundred and eighty five entrants, 2,996 kms, 91 cars
and 12 days of fun.
It's called a Variety Bash and today entrants from all across
Victoria will board Spirit of Tasmania to participate in the 2011
Variety Victoria Bash across Bass Strait to raise money for
charity.
The annual Variety Bash is Australia's most successful charity
motoring event. It is the focal point of fund raising efforts by
many hundreds of supporters of Variety, with the money raised
helping to empower children who are sick, disadvantaged or have
special needs to live, laugh and learn.
The road event involves outrageously themed cars and is not a
race or a rally, but an entertaining social event where half the
fun is getting there and raising funds to assist children with
special needs.
This year marks a milestone for Variety Victoria, with this
well-known event celebrating its 21st birthday. Since
its inception, the Vic Bash has travelled more than 83,000
kilometres across Australia and raised more than $16 million.
The 2011 event commenced in Melbourne on Monday 22 August where
bash entrants travelled to regional Victoria, visiting the
bushfire affected areas of Kinglake and Marysville before
journeying to an overnight stop at Warragul.
After crossing Bass Strait tonight they will spend the next 10
days travelling around Tasmania, experiencing many of the great
tourist attractions such as Cradle Mountain, The Nut in Stanley,
the West Coast Wilderness, Port Arthur, Wine Glass Bay and the
Great Lake. The entrants will arrive back in Melbourne on the
morning of Saturday 3 September.
