Tasmanian Markets
Local Culture: In the Market

Browsing stalls is a great way to pick up something interesting to remind you of your Tasmanian holiday.

Tasmania is a dream destination for those who love to browse markets, not least for the opportunity to meet the locals face-to-face, be they organic fruit and vegetable growers, craftspeople, buskers or winemakers. They’re the perfect introduction to an island community of fewer than 500,000 people, where every weekend is a chance to catch up with friends as part of the shopping and coffee outings.

SALAMANCA MARKET
Located on the edge of Hobart’s Sullivans Cove, Salamanca Market (Saturdays 8.30am to 3pm), bursts to life every Saturday against the spectacular backdrop of 19th century stone warehouses and dramatic Mt Wellington looming beyond. Take the time to chat to the cheerful stall operators – chances are they’re the creators of the handmade jewellery and hand-blown glass that is bound to catch your eye. There’s plenty to graze on while you browse – sample the delectable bratwurst sausages made by traditional methods by the team at Silver Hill at Cygnet in the Huon Valley.

ISLAND MARKETS

The undercover Island Markets at suburban Moonah (Thursday to Sunday 10am to 4pm), 10 minutes from the Hobart CBD, showcases an impressive selection of uniquely Tasmanian products, including local wines, oysters and cheeses. Check out and purchase the seafood Tasmania is renowned for – making a fresh catch of lobster from one of the live tanks is an opportunity not to be missed.

EVANDALE MARKET

Evandale Market, in historic Evandale, south of Launceston (Sunday 8am to 2pm), has a market offering the double delight of more than 100 stalls and a fabulous location. The country preserves are superb value and afterwards the village of Evandale itself features some quality galleries and antique shops to wander around once the market wraps up.

PENGUIN AND COMMUNITY MARKETS

Penguin Market, just east of Burnie (Sunday from 9am), boasts the biggest covered market in the state with more than 300 stalls. The Community Market at Margate (Wednesdays 10am to 4pm), in the Channel district south of Hobart, is also worth a stop for the arts and crafts, tasty jams and district wines.
