| Tasmanian Premier Jim Bacon said that the
two new Bass Strait ferries embodied a new
era of prosperity for Tasmania.
“The two new ferries, bought by the
Tasmanian Government at a cost of around
$290 million, will lift the lid off access
to Tasmania and encourage many more Tasmanians
to travel by car to the mainland.
“Spirit of Tasmania I and II are the
Tasmanian Government's biggest single investment
since the development of the State's Hydro
system.
“Thanks to the purchase of the new
ferries, there is currently more than $300
million of tourism development in Tasmania
planned, or under construction.
“The new ferries have resulted in
bookings for the TT Line for September being
up nearly 70% compared to last September.
As a result six additional daylight sailings
have been scheduled for September and October.
“The additional sailings will operate
between Friday 20 September and Sunday 6
October and provide capacity for an additional
6,000 people to travel.”
Mr Bacon said the new ferries would provide
many benefits for Victoria as well.
“It means that more Tasmanians will
visit Victoria providing benefits to the
local economy. Many of these will be families
with their car.
“There are also the benefits of regional
Victorians and interstate visitors travelling
through regional Victoria to Melbourne to
board the ships.”
Mr Bacon said that Tasmania was an ideal
holiday destination.
“Our natural beauty, local produce,
and our stunning sights and attractions are
second to none.
“I invite all mainlanders to come
and visit us in Tasmania and there is no
better way to do that than aboard one of
our new ‘twins’.”
