Spirit III Sails Into Sydney

After much anticipation, Spirit of Tasmania III will sail into Circular Quay today in preparation for its inaugural voyage to Tasmania on 13 January 2004.

The striking red and white 23,663 tonne vessel sailed into Sydney Harbour with much fanfare, accompanied by a flotilla of boats and masses of people welcoming the new Sydney ship.

In the initial stage of its service, Spirit of Tasmania III will depart both Sydney and Devonport three times a week, departing 3pm and arriving 11.30am.

The overnight cruise includes dinner, brunch, onboard shopping, movies and live entertainment, and passengers can take their cars on the ship for free 45 weeks a year (conditions apply).

Spirit of Tasmania III had a project price of $AUD105 million including purchase, upgrades and port works.

Spirit of Tasmania announced the purchase of its newest vessel on 3 July this year, and the ship, purchased from Greece, arrived into Hobart late October.

It underwent $8 million of upgrades while in Hobart, before sailing to Devonport, on to Melbourne and finally, Sydney.

Captain Jim Lewis, who skippered Spirit of Tasmania III on its voyage from Hobart to Devonport, said the ship handled the long journey "beautifully".

"Her stability, power and manoeuvrability are excellent, and the facilities for passengers are great," he said.   "Passengers will be very pleased with the comfort onboard."

Spirit of Tasmania Chief Executive Peter Simmons said the introduction of Spirit of Tasmania III would open up access between the states of New South Wales and Tasmania

"I think people are finding sea travel and cruises an increasingly desirable way to travel," said Mr Simmons.   "It's not just about getting from A to B anymore - it's the experience as well."

The ship follows the success of Spirit of Tasmania I and II , which service between Melbourne and Devonport every night and also complete day sailings based on demand.
