Marathon man runs on water for charity
A 66-year-old Tasmanian man will run from Devonport to Sydney this weekend on board Spirit of Tasmania to raise a target of $10,000 for Camp Quality.
Ultramarathon runner, Vlastik Skvaril, will run on a treadmill on board the ship for the entire overnight journey of over 22 hours – a hugely impressive feat at any age.
Vlastik, whose marathon achievements include running 246km from Athens to Sparta, said he was very excited about the upcoming charity run.
“I’m glad I can use my passion and ability to benefit such a worthwhile charity. Camp Quality provides valuable support to children living with cancer, and their families,” he said.
Peter Crosswell, Manager for Camp Quality Tasmania, said the organisation currently supported children along the coast, as well as two children who recently relapsed.
“The monies raised from Vlastik’s run will go towards helping these children and others in Tasmania. Vlastik’s commitment to Camp Quality will have a huge positive effect on both the children and their families.”
Tasmanians have shown their generous support for Vlastik, donating $4,300 for his cause so far.
Departing Devonport on Saturday afternoon (10 September), Vlastik will arrive in Sydney on Sunday and continue his fundraising the following day at shopping centres around the city suburbs.
Spirit of Tasmania Chief Executive Peter Simmons said Vlastik’s fundraising efforts were inspiring.
“We’re happy to be sponsoring Vlastik’s travel to and from Sydney. This is a tremendous feat and we wish him the best with his fundraising efforts,” said Mr Simmons.
