A new era is set to begin for Spirit of Tasmania, with the arrival of two new ships – Spirit of Tasmania IV and Spirit of Tasmania V. The new ships will replace our existing fleet, Spirit of Tasmania I and Spirit of Tasmania II, and are currently being built in Finland by Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC).

The new Spirit of Tasmania ships have a gross tonnage of 48,000.

Ship dead weight is 6,400T.

Each ships sports 4x Wartsila 9 cylinder turbocharge dual fuel engines: LNG & Diesel.

These engines produce 10,305Kw of power each. 

The ship propellers are twin variable pitch propellers via reduction gearboxes 600/144 RPM.

The new vessels can maintain an average operation speed of 26 knots. 

This is equivalent to 48.2km/h.

Both of the new vessels have a capacity of 1800 passengers.

New vessels have an expanded capacity of 4098 vehicle lane metres.

Each vessel features 301 new cabins, 118 standard recliners and 47 business recliners.

New vessels are expected to make the journey across Bass Strait in 9.5 – 11.5h.

The distance between Geelong and Devonport is 448km or 242 nautical miles.
