Travelling with a vehicle

There’s no better way to discover the delights of Victoria or Tasmania, than with your own car or bike.

Your Vehicle, Your Journey

Drive on and drive off to adventure

There’s never been a better time to bring your own wheels to Tasmania. With the new Spirit of Tasmania IV and Spirit of Tasmania V, more travellers than ever can drive on and drive off with everything they need for an unforgettable getaway. Thanks to significantly increased vehicle capacity, the new ships can carry many more cars and more than four times as many RVs and towable holiday rigs, making self-drive adventures easier than ever. Skip the luggage limits and hire car queues, relax on board, then roll straight into Tasmania’s spectacular scenery, charming towns and hidden gems.

Cars / 4WD

Load the car up with extra suitcases, camping gear and fishing rods and simply drive on board.

Motorbike

Tasmanian roads are described as perfect for motorcycle enthusiasts.

Motorhome / Caravan

If the open roads of Tassie are where you’re living for the next few weeks, you may as well go all out, with a fully equipped motorhome or caravan.

Bicycle

Good news for cyclists, you can bring your bike on Spirit of Tasmania and take advantage of Tassie’s superb trails.

Electric vehicle information

Spirit of Tasmania is pleased to welcome passengers traveling with electric vehicles (EVs). There are set procedures in place regarding the carriage of electric and hybrid vehicles on board. These vehicles are allocated to a specific, designated area within the ship. This area has been chosen to minimize risks associated with electric vehicle transportation.

Departure Location

Loading your vehicle at our terminals

Spirit of Tasmania’s Geelong terminal is located at Spirit of Tasmania Quay in North Shore, approximately 5km from the Geelong CBD.

Boarding in Geelong

Driving on board Spirit of Tasmania via our Geelong terminal is a breeze – watch our boarding video to see for yourself. Happy sailing!

Driving on board

Driving your vehicle on board is easy and stress-free. Just head to Spirit of Tasmania Quay. Follow the signs to the “Passenger Vehicles” entrance and enter via the check in booths. (Check-in opens between 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours prior to departure and closes strictly 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time.)

Waiting to proceed

Drive towards the vehicle booth and wait to proceed. When the vehicle booth has opened, please present your e-ticket and photo ID to receive your boarding pass.

Security and quarantine

Once you’ve received your boarding pass, proceed for a routine security and quarantine inspection. Please note, fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, plant products, soil and a list of other items cannot be brought into Tasmania. Visit the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment website for further information.

Once you have completed the security and quarantine inspection, proceed to the marshalling yard.

Prepare and park

Once you have parked your vehicle in the marshalling yard, and if time permits prior to boarding, you are welcome to enter the terminal building and use the facilities available to you. This includes a terminal cafe, bathrooms, pet exercising yard and children’s play area. When required to return to your vehicle, a terminal announcement will sound advising you of this.

Parking procedures

When it is time to board, you will be directed to board via the bow entrance or up the sky bridge. Remember to put your handbrake on and place your vehicle in gear (manual) or park (automatic). There are five vehicle decks so once parked, we recommend that you take note of what deck you are on. There are parking reminder flyers available in every vehicle deck lift/stairwell to assist.

Secure your vehicle

You may take one carry-on bag or suitcase on board and leave the remainder of your luggage in your car. Your vehicle cannot be accessed during the voyage so please take medication and other personal items with you. The carry-on baggage allowance is one medium bag or suitcase with the maximum dimensions of 66cm x 46.5cm x 27.5cm. No weight restrictions apply.

Please view our contact us page if you have any further queries.

Boarding in Devonport

Spirit of Tasmania’s Devonport terminal is located on the Esplanade in East Devonport. Free parking is available at the Devonport terminal.

Navigate to the Terminal

Head north on Tarleton St, East Devonport. Follow the signs to “Spirit of Tasmania” and turn left into Murray Street. Then turn right and look for the “Spirit of Tasmania Passenger Vehicles” entrance. (Check-in opens between 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours prior to departure and closes strictly 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time.)

Check-in at the Vehicle Booth

Drive towards the vehicle booth. When the vehicle booth has opened, please present your e-ticket and photo ID to receive your boarding pass.

Spirited Travellers Say

We took our caravan on the SOT for the first time and found the process very smooth and efficient. Staff were great. I love the way you serve tassie wines and spirits and the buffet dinner was superb. Well done.

Very well organised with plenty of staff to guide us through the sometimes daunting process of understanding what’s required of us as passengers with car and large caravan. Directions were clear and we felt well looked after. The cabin was great, providing us with sufficient private space. Well done team.

I would like to sincerely thank your wonderful staff for going out of thier way in assisting me to be able to get our Car and Caravan onto the ship. Because of my partners inability to be able to walk or drive I was left to negotiate the boarding myself, but the fantastic friendly ground crew guided me all the way. I would also like recommend the office staff who arranged a cabin for George and organiszed a wheelchair medical assistant to deliver George to the ship where he deposited him in to the cabin, I was given a site on the ship that was right next to the entrance and only a few meters from the lift, where I found the cabin only 5 metres from the lift. I cannot praise all those people enough who helped me through a very stresstful time.

I have mobility challenges and the staff from the first phone call to make enquiries, to the staff at the Geelong terminal and then those on board, were100% helpful and kind. It’s was the kindness and genuine willingness to help that struck me most. Thank you all so much. Our cabin was clean, well provisioned and comfortable.

This is both 5 stars for Geelong and Devonport terminal. We were due to get on the 10pm ferry, 2ks from the terminal our car broke down. Devonport towed our vehicle onto the ship with no drama and then Geelong towed us off and put us up in the truckies lounge until we sorted out a tow to the mechanic. All the staff were nothing but helpful and supportive. Thankyou so much!
