Step‑by‑step pet guide

Eight steps for a safe and stress-free pet crossing, from booking to disembarkation.

Your pet travel checklist

1. Before you book

Before booking, make sure your pet is eligible to travel and that you understand your responsibilities. This helps ensure you select the right option and avoid issues later.

  • Confirm your pet meets eligibility requirements, including breed restrictions and fitness to travel.
  • Ensure you can safely manage and care for your pet throughout the journey.
  • Understand where pets can travel on board and the requirements for each option.

When booking, include your pet and complete all required details. The process is straightforward but must be completed accurately.

  • Enter the number of passengers and pets when starting your booking.
  • Select your accommodation, where you’ll see pet‑friendly cabins, standard cabins, recliners and onboard kennels listed together.
  • Choose a pet‑friendly cabin if travelling with your pet, or add a kennel.
  • Complete all required declarations, including breed and safety confirmations.

Preparing in advance helps reduce stress and ensures a smooth journey for you and your pet.

  • Check your pet is fit and well enough to travel.
  • If travelling with a dog to Tasmania, ensure it has been treated for hydatid tape worm within 14 days, and bring documentary proof (such as a receipt or vet’s certificate) and the signed Dog Declaration form to present during inspections.
  • Pack essentials, including leads, carriers or trolleys, bedding, waste bags, pet food and water bowl.
  • Ensure any required documentation or declarations are completed such as:
    • an Animal Cage Declaration Form with certification from a registered veterinarian confirming the suitability of the housing unit for animals travelling in cages in trailers, utes etc.
    • Complete and submit all forms at least 24 hours prior to sailing,
  • If your pet requires special assistance during the voyage, you must provide a valid veterinary certificate at least 72 hours prior to travel, confirming the need. Approved requests will allow supervised access to your pet during the journey. For more information, contact our Customer Contact Centre on 1800 634 906.
  • Arrive early to allow enough time for check-in.

Before you travel checklist

  • Your pet is fit and ready to travel.
  • You have selected the correct travel option.
  • All required documentation is completed and submitted.
  • Essentials are packed and ready.
  • You have planned your arrival time.

Check-in opens 2.5 hours before departure and closes strictly 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

  • Arriving with a vehicle: Keep your pet in your vehicle and check-in at the vehicle booth. You will receive your boarding pass and yellow Pet Onboard tag
  • Arriving as a foot passenger: Leave your pet outside, check in inside the terminal, then return and accompany your pet to the transit bus as directed.
  • Pets must be on a lead or secured in a carrier at all times. Cats cannot be on lead.

Your boarding pass will be issued at check-in and used for boarding and onboard access.

All passengers, luggage and vehicles are subject to security screening before boarding. Ensure your belongings meet screening requirements and check restricted items before travel.

  • Biosecurity restrictions apply to items such as fruit, vegetables, plants and honey.
  • These items must be declared or disposed of prior to boarding.
  • All dogs entering Tasmania are subject to biosecurity entry conditions and must be treated for hydatid tape worm within 14 days prior to entering Tasmania.
  • Sign the declaration form provided at quarantine indicating your dog has been treated, and present evidence.
  • Follow all instructions from staff during screening and inspections.
  • A dedicated pet area is available at the terminal for toilet breaks prior to boarding.

Ensure all requirements are met before arriving at the terminal to avoid delays or refusal of boarding.

Boarding is managed by crew and may vary depending on vehicle type and travel arrangements. Follow all instructions to ensure safe and efficient boarding.

  • Foot passengers will be transported to the vessel with their pets by bus. Pets must be contained in a secure travel crate, pet trolley or on a lead in the transit bus during the transfer.
  • Vehicles are boarded based on size and length, not arrival time.
  • Drivers are to follow crew directions when driving on board and parking.
  • Once parked, head towards the appropriate lifts and stairwell.
    • If using a kennel, head towards the blue lifts and stairwell to access the kennel area on Deck 7. The Pet Attendant at the kennel will assign a kennel and provide a key card to unlock the kennel. Be prepared to lift your pet. Advise Pet Attendants of any special requirements at the time of boarding.
    • If staying in a pet-friendly cabin, use the green lifts and stairwell to access the cabins on Deck 9.
  • Pets must remain under close control when moving through the vessel.
  • Pets must be on a lead or in a carrier at all times while moving through the ship.

While on board, you are responsible for managing your pet’s behaviour, movement and wellbeing.

  • Pets must be kept under close control and only taken into permitted areas.
  • In pet‑friendly cabins, pets remain in the cabin except for toileting or direct transit.
  • Use the pet‑friendly deck area for toilet breaks where applicable.
  • If using kennels, follow pet attendant and crew instructions. Access is permitted only when approved.

At the end of your journey, follow all crew instructions to ensure a safe and orderly disembarkation for both passengers and pets. Movement is controlled, and timing may vary depending on your travel arrangement.

  • Pets must remain on a lead or secured in a carrier when moving through the vessel.
  • Collect your pet from kennels only when directed by crew.
  • Do not remove pets from controlled areas until instructed.

For a smooth process, wait for clear direction before accessing vehicle decks or kennel areas.
