Natural landscapes provide inspiration for new terminal design

GeelongPort and Spirit of Tasmania have unveiled the design images of Spirit of Tasmania’s new terminal building set to be constructed at Corio Quay in Geelong.

The state-of-the-art building, as part of Spirit of Tasmania’s passenger and freight terminal precinct, will be operational in Geelong in 2022, with construction due to begin later this year.

GeelongPort Chief Executive Officer Brett Winter is pleased to have completed the design phase of the precinct.

“A lot of thought has gone into the design of the terminal building with inspiration for the building’s design being drawn from the beautiful landscapes that Tasmania is famous for,” he said.

The design created by Brand Architects incorporates angled windows and sunshades over the glass façade that evoke images of the jagged contours of Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain and the icy waters of Dove Lake, which form a dramatic vista that can be enjoyed from the lake shores.

Cradle Mountain is synonymous with nature, wilderness and all things pristine. The colour and materials palette was chosen accordingly, with the neutral greys and bronze colours reminiscent of the dolerite peak, often shrouded by cloud.

“The final design is both striking and functional and it will provide the hundreds of thousands of visitors to Victoria and Tasmania every year, a contemporary, comfortable and streamlined experience as part of their voyage,” said Brett Winter.

Spirit of Tasmania Chief Executive Officer Bernard Dwyer said, ‘We are very pleased with the new terminal design and how the architectural features reflect the Company’s long Tasmanian heritage.’

‘This building will be a place our staff will be proud to work and our passengers will love to come as they embark on their journey to and from Tasmania.’

The architecturally designed terminal facilities will create a comfortable and accessible environment for passengers including a café, dedicated play area for children and spacious lounge areas.

The interior design creates a calm and welcoming space for passengers to relax prior to their voyage and for family and friends to greet their loved ones on arrival.

‘Our employees will benefit greatly from the new office facilities, crew accommodation and staff amenities that have been purpose built to meet our requirements for now and in the future,’ said Bernard Dwyer.

Spirit of Tasmania’s move to Geelong will be a great boost for Tasmanian and Victorian businesses who have been impacted by ongoing travel restrictions as a result of COVID-19. Geelong will be fully established as a key tourism gateway opening a whole visitor experience with greater ease of access and proximity to world class tourism destinations in Victoria including those across Geelong and the broader G21 region.
