Chairmaking Workshop at the Rare Trades Centre

More Information

Join Tasmanian Windsor Chairmaker Jon Grant for a five-day intensive workshop dedicated to creating the iconic Democratic Chair.

Designed by American master craftsman Curtis Buchanan, this chair is a symbol of accessibility and legacy, built with affordable, readily available tools. It’s a perfect introduction to the world of chairmaking, allowing more people to embrace this rare craft and carry it into the future.

Guided by Jon, learn to use traditional hand tools such as the drawknife to shape the legs, posts, spindles, and crest.

From start to finish, this workshop will immerse you in the artistry of chairmaking while crafting a beautiful, functional piece that tells a story of craftsmanship and tradition.

Held at Ballarat’s Australian Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades, a world-class facility dedicated to learning and preserving Australia’s rare arts and trades through a series of workshops, masterclasses, events, and residencies.
