The Powelltown Tramway follows the routes of tramways built in the early 1900s to open up the area for logging. There are a variety of tramway walks from a few hours to a couple of days.
Generally speaking, this is considered a challenging trek.
Along the tracks, you’ll find tree ferns and myrtle beech trees in moist gullies. Mountain ash forests, stringybark and mountain ash are at lower levels.
The remains of the bridges along the Powelltown tramline are unsafe. Leave them alone and follow the tracks through the gullies. Be prepared for leeches and wear long trousers.
One of Australia’s most iconic travel experiences, Spirit of Tasmania makes travelling across Bass Strait flexible, convenient and easy.
