Celebrate the artistry and sustainability of waggas—quilts created from necessity during Australia’s settler, wartime, and depression eras. Made from recycled jute bags, fabric scraps, and worn garments, these utilitarian pieces reflect resilience, resourcefulness, and the often-overlooked stories of working-class women.
This exhibition, inspired by a quote from Kate Grenville’s The Idea of Perfection, explores the connections between wagga quilts, memory, and material culture. RMIT researchers Ricarda Bigolin and Chantal Kirby (D and K) reimagine fashion as a platform for storytelling and critique. Through garments, performance, and film, they challenge norms and invite audiences to rethink how fashion is produced, consumed, and valued.
Designed in collaboration with Stuart Geddes and Žiga Testen, and supported by RMIT University, this exhibition offers a powerful reflection on sustainability, history, and the enduring legacy of handmade textiles. Don’t miss this transformative experience.
