Whorouly is a rural township on the Ovens River, between Wangaratta and Myrtleford, snuggled between the Great Alpine Road and the Snow Road. The town was established after farm selection was opened up in the late 1860s and today remains an area filled with beef and dairy cattle, orchards and market gardens.

In 1919 the start of the Soldier Settlement Scheme brought many families to the area and the town’s population surged again during WW2 when an Italian Prisoner-of-War camp was set up at Whorouly East. Some of the 1000 male ex-prisoners settled in the area after the war. Up until the 1980’s Whorouly was part of a large tobacco-producing region but these days you’re more likely to spot grape varietals growing in the fields.

If you’re craving a coffee, Devonshire tea, light lunch or a treat be sure to pop into the Whorouly Café situated on the site of the original general store of the 1880’s. Needing a weekend dinner? Try the Whorouly Hotel just up the road, open Friday and Saturday nights serving cold brews and delicious pub fare.

Whorouly is a convenient stop for cyclists needing a break, being just a short 6km from the Murray-to-Mountains Rail Trail and camping is also available at the Recreation Reserve across from the café.
