Feel like the king of the mountain in a newly refurbished Cradle Mountain Lodge King Billy Suite, which includes a double-sided log fire and private deck with a jacuzzi for soaking up sub-alpine wilderness sights, scents and sounds. On Lake St Clair’s wild shore, Pumphouse Point‘s premium option is The Retreat. This secluded, contemporary space has luxe locally handcrafted features including a big bath under the stars.
Southern serenity
Hobart’s MACq01 has the sleekest of contemporary design, but Australia’s first ‘storytelling hotel’ also reveals characters from local history in each space – of which the most coveted are Hosted Luxury Suites with grand waterfront views and butlers. You can also indulge at the sweet and chic Mövenpick Hotel Hobart, or experience a unique stay at the contemporary Moss Hotel.
Nearby at Corinda, choose from antique-filled rooms in this 1870s home built by the current owner’s great-great grandfather, or self-contained rustic-chic cottages and swish new pavilions in the grounds. The 1847 South Hobart mansion that’s now the Islington Hotel blends 19th and and 21st century elegance – best enjoyed in The Signature Room dominating an entire corner of the house.
Beyond Hobart, escape to The Woodbridge, an 1825 stately home overlooking the River Derwent that’s now a boutique hotel with eight spacious old-meets-new rooms. You can fly in by helicopter to The Peninsula Experience opposite Bruny Island. Choose from the century-old Cape House or modern Boat House amid 250 acres of wilderness on a private peninsula.
Eastern extravagance
You’re spoilt for choice amid Freycinet Peninsula’s breathtaking vistas. Perhaps Piermont, where stone cottages with log fires, spa baths and beachfront decks are an easy stroll from the 180-year-old homestead’s restaurant. Or Thalia Haven, a stunning modern building of stone and recycled timber set on 130 private acres overlooking Great Oyster Bay. Four bedrooms and shared luxe lounge and kitchen make it ideal for a great group escape, but couples love it too.
Or book your own island and enjoy solitude, penguins, dolphins, fishing, art, books and a luxurious copper-clad lodge with panoramic views of the pink-granite Hazards Mountains. Opposite Freycinet National Park, Picnic Island is a short water-taxi ride from shore, or arrive in style by seaplane from Hobart.
