Keel Laying of Spirit of Tasmania V

Keel Laying of Spirit of Tasmania V

17 May 2023

Construction of the second Spirit of Tasmania vessel remains on track with another significant milestone reached today.

The Keel Laying Ceremony for Spirit of Tasmania V is taking place at the RMC shipyard in Finland today with the project teams from both companies gathering to celebrate the first block being craned into place.

The Keel Laying Ceremony is an important milestone and long standing shipbuilding tradition. Recently minted 2023 Australian and Finnish coins are placed in the keel before the first block is lowered into position. The coins symbolise good fortune for the builders and all those who sail on the vessel.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Bernard Dwyer, was pleased to see the milestone being reached.

“The Keel Laying for Spirit of Tasmania V means we are another step closer to our second brand new ship reaching Tasmanian waters.  This is such an exciting project and it’s incredible to see our vision for our ships becoming a reality.”
