Spirit of Tasmania vessels safe for pets

The operator of the Spirit of Tasmania vessels, TT-Line Company Pty Ltd, says it is safe for pets to be transported across Bass Strait on its vessels.

CEO Bernard Dwyer said the company took the issue of safety and welfare of animals in its care very seriously.

“Last financial year the company transported more than 25,000 pets, and this financial year to date the number is in excess of 16,000,” he said.

“Before this week, Spirit of Tasmania’s records indicate that there was only one other reported dog death in our kennels in the past eight years.”

“For safety and security reasons passengers are not allowed on to the vehicle decks to check animals during the voyage. However under special circumstances, for example if veterinary care is needed, permission may be granted.” He said “But if there were safety and security issues the TT Line has the right to refuse such a request.”

Mr Dwyer said the company always investigated incidents reported to it and, when appropriate, worked to improve relevant processes.

“Further, TT-Line has always worked with authorities to investigate any incident reported,” he said.

Mr Dwyer said the company was is in direct contact with the owner of the dog found deceased last week, and had been since the incident was first reported.
