GeelongPort have reached agreement with TT Line Company Pty Ltd to relocate the Victorian port home of the Spirit of Tasmania vessels, from Station Pier, Port Melbourne to Corio Quay, north of Geelong.

The proposed $150 million project is an important investment in regional Australia, which will increase freight and exports for Victoria and jobs and tourism in regional Victoria.

GeelongPort has been an integral part of Geelong’s economic and social fabric for more than 150 years, helping to transform the city and region into the economic, tourism and community hub it is today.

Bringing TT-Line, and the iconic Spirit of Tasmania vessels to Geelong is another example of how GeelongPort is continuing to drive the prosperity of the region.

Natural landscapes provide inspiration for new terminal design

GeelongPort and Spirit of Tasmania have unveiled the final images of Spirit of Tasmania’s new terminal building set to be constructed at Corio Quay in Geelong.

The state-of-the-art building, as part of Spirit of Tasmania’s passenger and freight terminal precinct, will be operational in Geelong in 2022, with construction due to begin later this year.

“A lot of thought has gone into the design of the terminal building – our team which consists of APP who are overseeing the design and construction has worked closely with Brand Architects who drew inspiration for the building’s design from the beautiful landscapes that Tasmania is famous for, and most specifically Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park, with its beautiful mountains, rocky summits, lush greenery, quaint and historic huts, and hills rolling into its lakes,” he said.

“Not only stunning in design, the terminal building will include state-of-the-art facilities for both passengers and staff, and provide a space for them to relax before or after their voyage.”

The angled windows and sunshades over the glass façade evoke images of the jagged contours of Cradle Mountain and the icy waters of Dove Lake, which form a dramatic vista that can be enjoyed from the lake shores.

Cradle Mountain is synonymous with nature, wilderness and all things pristine. The colour and materials palette was chosen accordingly, with the neutral greys and bronze colours reminiscent of the dolerite peak, often shrouded by cloud. Spirit of Tasmania Chief Executive Officer Bernard Dwyer said, 'We are very pleased with the new terminal design and how the architectural features reflect the Company’s long Tasmanian heritage.’

Spirit of Tasmania’s move to Geelong will be a great boost for Tasmanian and Victorian businesses who have been impacted by ongoing travel restrictions as a result of COVID-19. Geelong will be fully established as a key tourism gateway opening a whole visitor experience with greater ease of access and proximity to world class tourism destinations including those across Geelong and the broader Barwon region.

GeelongPort is in the final stages of demolition works and is currently out for tender on civil construction and terminal construction.

Tasmania’s border entry conditions depend on where each traveller has spent time in the 14 days prior to their day of arrival.

Areas, premises and locations are assessed as either low, medium or high-risk based on Public Health advice.

Travellers who have been at high-risk premises or locations are not permitted to enter Tasmania, unless approved as an Essential Traveller.

All passengers travelling to Tasmania are required to register their travel. This includes Tasmanian residents returning to Tasmania.

Passengers who are unable to present an approved Tas e-Travel Pass or G2G Pass will NOT be permitted to board.

Passengers can also access the external decks and lounge areas throughout the voyage.

Yes, we have implemented a number of precautionary measures to reduce the risk to passengers and staff. After each journey the ship is cleaned by a professional cleaning crew. This includes cleaning and disinfecting surfaces in the cabins and common areas. Our staff follow the highest level of hygiene protocols and cleaning procedures. Hand sanitation stations are available in key areas on all decks. A Medical Attendant is on board for every sailing and all passengers and staff are all encouraged to maintain a safe distance at all times. For more information visit Sail Safe.

Yes, all passengers are required to wear a face mask in our terminals and on board our ships. Face masks must be worn at all times including during boarding and disembarkation and in any public areas on board. Face masks will be provided to passengers who do not have their own mask. Children under 12 years and passengers with a medical exemption are not required to wear a face mask.

You may temporarily remove your mask to eat or drink but this may only occur while seated. You must replace your mask immediately after you have finished eating or drinking.

To reduce shared contact, we only accept cashless payments in our terminals and on board in the dining, bar and convenience outlets. We accept credit and debit card payments including all ‘tap and go’ methods such as Apple Pay.

Yes, if you need to use medical equipment such as a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine or nebuliser while on board you must book a private cabin. On arrival please advise Reception on Deck 7 that you have a CPAP machine or nebuliser and provide your cabin number.

Medical equipment designed to aid in the monitoring or treatment of medical conditions e.g. medical oxygen cylinders, CPAP machines and nebulisers must adhere to the ships rating: Voltage 230V and Frequency 60Hz.

If you are travelling with your own medical equipment, it is your responsibility to check the rating on your equipment to ensure it complies. If you are unsure, please report to the pursers at Reception on Deck 7. They will have your equipment checked by the ship’s electrician. Note: please bring your own extension leads.
